Fire Up Your July 4th with These Patriotic Movies

Watching a movie is probably the easiest (and simplest) way to get everyone together and willing to have their phones turned off (or at least on airplane mode). To narrow down the overwhelming choices amongst suggestions from your friends, here are five July 4th movies that you can watch and feel patriotic.

Ready? Grab a plate, some food from the grill, a drink, and dim the light in the room.

#1: Independence Day (1996) - The one with Will Smith in it.

This blockbuster has to be high on any July 4 movie list.  Alien invasion of Earth and the attempt to save it by us humans. It takes place on, you guessed it, July 4.

#2: Top Gun (1986)

"I feel the need, the need for speed!" Fighter pilots Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer peacock for instructor Kelly McGillis in this action adventure about fighter pilots attending the Navy's elite training school. At least watch for the soundtrack — loaded with 80s anthems including "Danger Zone" and "Take My Breath Away". A perfect post-fireworks movie.

#3: Glory (1989)

Told from the point of view of Shaw (Matthew Broderick), its white commanding officer, "Glory" tells the story of the first formal unit of the U.S. Army during the American Civil War to be made up entirely of African-American men. The movie also stars Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington. How can you turn down a movie with Morgan Freeman in it?

#4: Born on the Fourth of July (1989)

Controversial when it was first released. Starring Tom Cruise as wheelchair-bound Vietnam veteran, who becomes an anti-war and pro-human rights political activist. Its message is as current as it can be as the world faces increasing violence to which wars may seem to be the default solution.

#5: Jaws (1975)

Do you know that this last week was Shark Week? Thriller has a way to bond people together. So why not combine that with July 4th gathering? This Spielberg classic blockbuster stars a great white shark terrorizes holidaymakers off the coast of Cape Cod through the July 4 holiday.
