A Thoughtful Holiday Gift Guide

Posted on 04 December 2015

My husband and I were talking about holiday gift shopping the other night. He mentioned that I always have very "thoughtful" ideas, some of them funky, some DIY. But they all are intended for the recipient, not the giver.

Let's think for a second - have you ever been given a gift that you don't know why you are getting, want to return, or simply don't know what to do with it, where to put it, but feel terrible to throw it away? Why are there terrible giver?

The truth is, it is not that the person is not being thoughtful. They are actually thoughtful. It is just that we tend to injecting our own liking for a gift when we shop. Something, we buy something for someone not even because they want it, but because we like it. And gifting it gives us a reason to buy it.

I truly believe that in order to receive, you need to give first. So, if you want to receive a thoughtful gift, give a thoughtful one first.

This post is my attempt to sharing my thought process on finding a "thoughtful" gift plus a curated, ready-to-shop list so you can get things going. Some of these items I actually own and love!

It is not a perfect blueprint because everyone thinks differently. But I hope it simplifies your process of coming up with a shopping list in the midst of all the deadlines that you have to deal with before the holidays.

You will feel like having done a satisfying jury process of your shopping list that even Martha Stewart will approve.

11. Philanthropist

For people who have everything and are big fans of charitable actions, you will not go wrong by donating money in their name. What you want to do is find out charities that they are already supporting. If you don't want to ask them but you know there is a cause they support, you can find a charity that supports that cause using Charity Navigator, which also gives you scores on how well this charity does in spending their money.

12. Savvy Spender

This is one of my favorite ideas - give the gift that grows! One year, my in-laws bought me a share of Costco stock and it has been growing ever since. You can simply write a check as a gift. Just wrap it up nicely. Or you can go the extra mile and print that out using one of the personalized services mentioned above. There is also services like GiveAShare where you can buy one share of a company's stock and have a certificate framed for you as a gift.
